If you’ve been on social media or even been outside this past weekend, you’re probably well aware that the Hudson Valley has been experiencing intense wildfires in recent days.

Now local fire departments are sharing the news that it’s not just wildfires. # of homes have suffered preventable home fires in the past seven days, according to the East Fishkill Fire District.

Now on Facebook, the East Fishkill Fire District is sharing some easily overlooked hazards that could be contributing to the dangerous wildfire season we are currently experiencing.

Dangerous fires in and around the Hudson Valley

During the last week of October, news began to spread about a forest fire in the Hemlock grove area in Marlboro. This would mark the start of a series of local fires spreading through the area.

The reason this season has been particularly dangerous due to brush and fires is because the season has been so dry and the high winds have contributed to the spread of the flames.

Fire hazards you probably forgot

Burn bans and emergency declarations have been issued across the region to remind residents to refrain from any form of outdoor burns, ranging from fire pits to certain barbecue grills. And while many heed the warnings, there are some overlooked dangers you should be wary of.

On Saturday, November 9, the East Fishkill Fire District took to Facebook to share this post:

“Over the past seven days, members of the East Fishkill Fire District have responded to three homes on fire, likely due to smoldering combustibles left outside the home”

They then shared some other ways fires can start unintentionally and pose a risk to your home or nearby bushes.

Do not park over dry leaves

Considered one of the most critical, overlooked hazards by the Stamford Fire DepartmentParking your vehicle on dry leaves or grass is a major hazard that you should take into account.

So how can this cause a fire?

“The Stamford Fire Department emphasizes that a catalyst can reach temperatures up to 1200°F – easily able to ignite dry leaves, which can ignite at temperatures as low as 300°F.”

Don’t just wipe cigarette butts everywhere!

The National Parks Service explains the risk of cigarette butts in rule #52 on fire prevention. In fact, according to the National Parks Service, it is

“Each year, more than 500 smokers and nonsmokers die in home fires caused by cigarettes and other smoking materials, making them one of the leading causes of fires in the United States.”

They recommend soaking cigarette butts AND ashes in water before properly disposing of them in the trash to ensure no embers are left behind.

Do not dump ash from wood stoves or fireplaces near houses or shrubbery

Like the cigarette butts, the still-hot embers and ash from these applicants pose a high risk of igniting dry leaves, grass and brush.

Beware of sparks from electrical equipment

Commonly used power tools such as lawn mowers can cause major problems if used on dry grass or over dry leaves and weeds. The USDA Forest Service shares that sparks from these machines can ignite if the blades drive over rocks.

In addition to mowing the appropriate areas of your lawn, they recommend installing spark arrestors that can prevent sparks from igniting and catching fire.

Remember: NO outdoor fires

In addition to these overlooked fire starters, here’s another reminder to avoid lighting a campfire or fire pit. With the current dry conditions, the risk is simply far too great. Especially now that so many of our local fire departments are working to control the large number of fires already raging around the Hudson Valley.

Hidden fire hazards in the home

Outside of bushfire season, it is always good to regularly check your home for possible fire starters. Here are 10 that you may often overlook:
